How to Travel Sustainably in 2026

Practical steps every traveler can take to reduce their environmental footprint without sacrificing the quality of their experience.

Sustainable travel isn't a trend—it's a responsibility. As global tourism rebounds and expands, the choices we make as travelers have never mattered more. The good news? Traveling sustainably doesn't mean sacrificing comfort or adventure.

Transportation is the biggest lever. Direct flights produce significantly less carbon than connecting routes. When possible, choose trains for shorter distances—Europe's rail network and Southeast Asia's expanding high-speed lines make this easier than ever.

Accommodation choices matter enormously. Seek out hotels and lodges with verified sustainability certifications. Many eco-lodges now offer experiences that rival luxury resorts: solar-powered infinity pools, farm-to-table dining, and immersive nature programs.

Reduce single-use plastics by carrying a reusable water bottle with a built-in filter, a set of bamboo utensils, and a cloth shopping bag. These small items take up negligible space but eliminate dozens of disposable items over a trip.

Engage with conservation directly. Many destinations now offer volunteer experiences that contribute meaningfully—coral reef restoration in the Maldives, wildlife monitoring in Costa Rica, or reforestation projects in Borneo.

The most sustainable thing you can do, however, is stay longer in fewer places. Slow travel reduces transportation emissions, deepens cultural understanding, and supports local economies more effectively than hopping between five countries in two weeks.
